About Munnar
Munnar is one of Kerala's most celebrated hill stations, set high in the Western Ghats at around 1,600 metres above sea level. Its cool climate, misty mornings, and sweeping views draw travellers year-round.
The region is best known for its vast tea plantations — carpets of emerald green that roll across the hills as far as the eye can see. Established during the British colonial era, many of these estates still produce some of India's finest teas.
Attractions & Sightseeing
- Tea Gardens: Walk or drive through the manicured tea slopes around the Kannan Devan Hills. Several estates offer guided tours where you can see tea processing firsthand.
- Eravikulam National Park: Home to the endangered Nilgiri tahr, this protected area offers stunning high-altitude grasslands and closes briefly each year during the calving season.
- Mattupetty Dam & Lake: A popular picnic spot surrounded by wooded hills, with boating facilities on the reservoir.
- Top Station: The highest point on the Munnar–Kodaikanal road, offering panoramic views of the valley and the distant plains of Tamil Nadu.
- Anamudi Peak: The highest peak in South India (2,695 m), located within Eravikulam National Park and a favourite for trekkers.
Practical Travel Information
Munnar is well connected by road. The nearest major railway station is at Aluva (about 110 km away), and Cochin International Airport is roughly 110 km from town. Buses and taxis ply regularly from Kochi, Aluva, and other Kerala cities.
The best months to visit are from September to March, when the weather is pleasantly cool and skies are generally clear. The monsoon months (June to August) bring heavy rainfall, transforming the hills into a lush green paradise but occasionally disrupting road travel.
Accommodation ranges from budget homestays to mid-range resorts and a few upmarket plantation bungalows. Booking ahead is advisable during the peak winter season.
